If you yell, she won't trust you

These words came out of my mouth this morning: "If you yell at Annie, she won't trust you. Stay calm and don't yell even when she is doing something naughty"

She had found a spot in the carpet with an interesting smell and became fixated on digging up whatever was underneath. In the meantime she shredded up that corner of our disgusting carpet which was hypothetically fine but realistically not great.

Several attempts to redirect ended up in her continuously heading back to the same spot to dig. Henry got impatient and yelled, which prompted the above from my mouth.

How much I have learned about being a parent from having a dog! It has only been 13 months, but the lessons have been fast and exponential in their value. Don't yell at the teenagers, don't yell at the little kids or they won't trust you! Stay calm even when you want to wring their necks because they won't respond to anxious energy and yelling.

Lesson learned today.
