Eating grass

Do all dogs see grass as food? Consider the world around if you saw an item of food that was irresistible, FREE and for the taking everywhere you looked? The possibilities for distractions are endless, so training becomes that much more challenging.

Annie loves grass. Especially mounds of long, unmowed grass that grows along every sidewalk we walk on daily. You can only imagine the leash yanking, “leave it” commands and frustration this can cause. She simply cannot resist burying her muzzle and munching as she did several times this morning.

There is a myth that dogs who eat grass have an upset tummy, but recently that has been dispelled for me as I read a contrary theory: that dogs who eat grass do it because THEY LIKE GRASS.

I am no different from Annie. I like Diet Pepsi. If I see a cold can, a cold bottle, a fountain cup with ice, I cannot resist. It is so distracting to me that I must have it. I will yank on my steering wheel when I get a craving and put my muzzle in that can/bottle/cup and just enjoy it. Dogs teach us so much about the world and one lesson I have learned is that when you like something, it doesn’t mean something is wrong with you. It just means you LIKE that thing. So leave me alone all you soda haters.
